Bachelor’s Degree
In order to enter dental school, applicants must have acquired a bachelor’s degree. The degree is usually a four year university program (sometimes three) completed after graduating from high school. There are different types of degrees; BSc is a bachelor’s in Science and a BA is a bachelor’s in Art. Depending on type of the degree, different requirements must be completed towards graduating. Many students wonder if a specific pre-dental program exists. This is a common misconception that a specific bachelor’s degree is required for dental school. Regardless of the program, there are prerequisite courses required by dental schools which must be completed. Dental schools are looking for students who can handle a heavy course load, this is why it is best to maintain a full course load throughout your bachelor’s degree. The courses taken are more important than the actual program. Most dental schools have course requirements which should be completed regardless of the program the applicant is in. The university the courses are taken at does not alter one’s chances of being accepted into a dental school as long as the university is accredited. Upon application, the grades are processed through a portal and no special consideration is given based on the university. Although most bachelor’s degrees are four years programs, many people do not finish them in four years. This is understandable depending on individual’s life situations. It is important to keep in mind that applicants may have to write an extra statement in their application regarding the reasons behind this.
